Cognate with Koshikijima (Kagoshima) あぶや abuya and あっば abba; Okinawan あんだ anda; Miyako あっゔぁ avva; and standard Japanese あぶら【油】 abura "oil". The term likely stems from the mizenkei form of the verb あぶる【炙る・焙る】 aburu "to warm; to toast; to roast; to grill; to heat up".
