Ultimately of Sino-Japanese origin; compound of あく【悪】 aku "bad" and じゃ【蛇】 ja "snake". Historically attested under the entry "Aku-ziya, アクジヤ, 悪蛇, N. "A poisonous snake" in the book Japanese-English Dictionary (1881), Volume 1, page 62, by Johann Joseph Hoffmann.
