Etymology

Reduction of the standard Japanese term まじめ【真面目】 majime "serious, diligent, earnest".

Notes

Adverbial forms include まじで・マジで【真面で】 majide or maji de "seriously, really, serious", and まじに・マジに【真面に】 maji ni "in seriousness, seriously". The former form is also used as an interjection equivalent to the popular English phrases: "Are you serious?", "No way!", "Seriously?", "You're kidding me, right?", etc.
