Etymology

Japanese slang derived from the English terms "new" and "half" in reference to the fact that half of the person's appearance and persona has been changed in terms of gender (i.e. half of them is new, different). Sometimes transcribed as "newhalf" or "new half" in English. Compare also: "shemale", "ladyboy", "heshe". (Attested since 1995, and likely earlier)
