Etymology
Attested in the Dictionnaire Japonais-Français (1868), page 431, by Léon Pagés, itself a translation of the 1603 Nippo Jisho.
Cognate to Iwate and Yamagata いだぢ・いだじ idaji; Chiba えたち etachi and えだぢ・えだじ edaji; Kagoshima ゆた yuta; and standard Japanese いたち【鼬・鼬鼠】 itachi "weasel". Possibly also cognate to Kagoshima ゆたて yutate and ゆたてん yutaten 【鼬貂】 "weasel".
