いおとい【魚捕い・魚獲い】

iotoi

Definition

Noun

  1. Fisherman

Etymology

Cognate to Kagoshima いおとい io toi; Okinawan いゆとぅやー iyu tuyaa "fisherman"; and Yaeyama (Hatoma) いづとぅり idzuturi "fishing". Also related to Yonaguni いゆとぅんとぅ iyu tuntu and いすとぅんとぅ isu tuntu "fisherman".

Historically attested for Japanese in the 和名抄 Wamyōshō (938 CE) under the spelling 【魚捕】 uwo tori or iwo tori and the definition "fishing, fisherman". Ultimately derived from a compound of いを【魚】 iwo "fish" and とり【捕り・獲り】 tori, the nominal form of とる【捕る・獲る】 toru "to take; to gain; to catch; to capture".
