Etymology

Historically attested in the Konkoukenshuu (混効験集, 1711), "Words of the Royal Palace", under the spelling ふなこ funako (#2 p. 27). Cognate with standard Japanese ふなこ【船子・舟子】 funako "sailor, seaman". Ultimately derived from ふな【船】 funa- "boat, ship" and 【子】 -ko "child".
