Historically recorded in Gonza's works (ca. early 18th century) under the spelling шеке (sheke). Cognate to standard Japanese せかい【世界】 sekai "world". Ultimately from Chinese 【世界】 "world" (cf. Mandarin shìjiè; Cantonese sai3 gaai3; Min Nan sè-kài; Min Dong sié-gái; Hakka sṳ-kie; Korean 세계 segye; and Vietnamese thế giới).
