Cognate to standard Japanese しょうゆ【醤油・醬油】 shouyu "soy sauce". Ultimately from Chinese 【酱油・醤油・醬油】 "soy sauce" (cf. Mandarin jiàngyóu; Cantonese zoeng3 jau4; Min Nan chiùⁿ-iû; Wu tsian; Middle Chinese *tsjaŋ jǝw), itself a compound of "thick sauce; paste" and "oil".
