eq · e'

Pronunciation: [ʲeʔ]

Definition

Noun

  1. Moxibustion

Etymology

Cognate to Gotou, Nagasaki やっ yaq ~ ya'; Amakusa, Kumamoto えーと eeto; Kagoshima えつ etsu and えっ eq ~ e'; Kikai やちゅー yachuu; Nakijin やーちょー yaachoo; Okinawan やーちゅー yaachuu; and the standard Japanese form やいと【灸】 yaito "moxibustion". Believed to stem from 【*焼き処】 *yakito/*yakisho "burn treatment", but the term may ultimately be from Chinese 【艾草】 "mugwort; wormwood" (cf. Mandarin ài cǎo; Cantonese ngaai6 cou2; Min Nan (h)iã21 tshau44/53, (h)iã21 tshoo44/53aĩ21 tshau44/53 and aĩ21 tshoo44/53), as dried mugwort and wormwood were used in Chinese medicine for moxibustion.
