yukui

Etymology

Cognate to Fukuoka よこい yokoi; Amakusa (Kumamoto) よくぃ yokwi and よこい yokoi; Okinawan ゆくい yukui; standard Japanese いこい【憩い・憩】 ikoi "rest". Ultimately derived from the nominal form of the verb よこう【憩う】 yokou "to rest" (> standard Japanese こう ikou), which itself stems from よこ【横】 yoko "horizontal" followed by a verbal ending.
