Etymology

Derived from the name みやこ【宮古】 miyako by way of vowel raising (ko > ku), palatalization and vowel length compensation (miya > myaa), and nasal shift (my > ny > n). Suffixed by the genitive particle ん n, and the noun suffix ちゅ【人】 -chu, meaning "person, people".
