でーふぁー

deefaa

Pronunciation: [deːɸaː]

Definition

Noun

  1. Mortar (used to crush and grind rice); earthenware mortar

Etymology

Cognate to Okinawan でーふぁー deefaa; Miyako ないぱ naipa; Hatoma だいぱー daipaa; and standard Japanese らいぼん【擂盆】 raibon "mortar". The Ryukyuan and Japanese forms suggest Proto-Japonic *rai-pan. Ultimately of Chinese origin, likely a combination of 【擂】 "grind; mash" and 【盆】 "basin; pot; bowl"; also related to 【擂钵・擂缽】 "mortar and pestle" (cf. Mandarin léi bō; Cantonese leui4 but3).
