Derived from the root けぶ・けむ【毛ぶ・毛む】 kebu ~ kemu "hairy" (cf. Japanese けぶかい【毛深】 kebukai "thick-haired"), itself formed from け【毛】 ke "hair" (cf. Okinawan きー【毛】 kii) and the rendaku form of ふ【生】 fu "thick (growth)"; affixed by the Okinawan person suffix あー -aa.
