Cognate to Tottori ぬしと nushito; Niigata and Takajima (Nagasaki) のすっと nosutto; Amakusa (Kumamoto) ぬすど nusudo and ぬすっと nusutto; Kagoshima ぬすと nusutoぬしと nushito and ぬいど nuido; Kagoshima and Tokunoshima ぬしど nushido; Okinawan ぬすどぅ nusudu and ぬする nusuru; and standard Japanese ぬすびと【盗人】 nusubito, ぬすっと nusutto and ぬすと nusuto "thief". Ultimately a compound of ぬすむ【盗む・偸む】 nusumu "to steal" and ひと【人】 hito "person".
