Etymology

Cognate to Tsugaru (Aomori) はど hado; Ibaraki はどめ hadome; Hachijo はとめ hatome; Ishikawa はっとめ hattome; Eicho (Kagoshima) はど hado; Toshima (Tokara Islands) はと ⌞hato; Kasari (Amami) p'at'o; Shodon (Amami) hato(o); Okinoerabu ふぁーとぅ faatu; Yoron ぱとぅ patu; Okinawan ほーとぅ hootu; Miyako はとぅ [hatu] and ぱとぅ [pʰatu]; Hateruma (Yaeyama) ぱとん paton [patoŋ]; Yonaguni はとぅ hatu; standard Japanese はと【鳩】 hato "dove, pigeon". Proto-Japonic *pato. Possibly related to modern Korean 비둘기 bidulgi /piduɭɡi/, which has the obsolete alternative forms 비돌기 bidolgi, 비도리 bidori, 비두로기 bidurogi, and 비두리 biduri.

Historical attestations: Satsuma dialect: Attested in Gonza's works (ca. 1738) under the forms fado "голубь (pigeon)" and obado "голубь (pigeon)". Okinawan: Attested under the spelling hótoo (hótu) "bird" in the 1818 Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo island in the Japan Sea, by Herbert John Clifford.
