Cognate to Kagoshima ひとっば hitobba; Kikai ひとぅつば hitutsuba and ひとぅとぅふぁ hitutufa; as well as Amami Oshima, Ukejima, Okinoerabu and Yoron ひとつば hitotsuba "inumaki (sp. Podocarpus macrophyllus)". Also cognate to standard Japanese ひとつば hitotsuba "Pyrrosia lingua", an unrelated species of fern. Likely a compound of ひとつ【一つ】 hitotsu "one; single" and the rendaku form of 【葉】 ha "leaf". Related to Okinoerabu いぬひとつば inuhitotsuba; as well as Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima and Okinoerabu やまひとつば yamahitotsuba "inumaki (sp. Podocarpus macrophyllus)".
