Etymology

Sense 1: Derived from いばら【茨・荊・棘】 ibara "thorny bush; briar" or "wild rose". Historical variants also include うばら ubara and むばら mubara. Sense 2: Originally from ばらぞく【薔薇族】 barazoku "rose tribe", the name of Japan's first commercially-circulated gay male magazine (1971). Its name stems from the fact that the rose was perceived as symbol of homosexuality in Japan
