こーれーぐーす【高麗胡椒】

kooreeguusu

Pronunciation: [koɾeːɡuːsu]

Definition

Noun

  1. Chili pepper (genus Capsicum); cayenne pepper; red pepper

Etymology

Cognate to the seldom-used standard Japanese form こうらいこしょう【高麗胡椒】 kouraikoshou "chili pepper; cayenne pepper". Ultimately derived from こうらい【高麗】 kourai (Okinawan こーれー kooree) "Korea" and こしょう【胡椒】 koshou (Okinawan ぐす -gusu or ぐーす -guusu) "pepper", owing to the fact that the seeds of such peppers were historically imported from Korea.
