Cognate to standard Japanese かっぱ【河童】 kappa "Kappa". Ultimately derived from a compound of かわ【川・河】 kawa "river" and わらば waraba, a variant of わらべ【童】 warabe "child". Literally meaning "river child".

Notes

In Japanese mythology, Kappa are considered to be notorious creatures, often pranking people and even luring both people and animals alike into the water where they drown.
