ぬみ【蚤】

numi

Pronunciation: [numi]

Definition

Noun

  1. Flea; fleas

Etymology

Cognate to Kagawa のんぴん nonpin; Gotō (Nagasaki) のんぺ nonpe; Kagoshima のん non and ぬん nun; Kikai ぬみ numi; Okinawan ぬみ numi; Miyako ぬん num; and standard Japanese のみ【蚤】 nomi "flea". Possibly derived from the nominal form of the verb のむ【飲む】 nomu, meaning "to drink; to take" as well as "to overwhelm" or, for some, of bimorphemic origin (e.g. のむ nomu + め me, a diminutive suffix).
