Derived from the historical term けうとし【気疎し】 keutoshi "strange; unfamiliar; creepy". Pronounced きょうとい kyoutoi during early modern times. Ultimately formed from け【気】 ke (now き ki) "spirit; nature" and うとし【疎し】 utoshi (now うとい【疎い】 utoi) "unfamiliar; estranged".
