しゅうきゅう【蹴球】 : shuukyuu | define meaning

Of Sino-Japanese origin. Derived from しゅう【蹴】 shuu "kick" and きゅう【球】 kyuu "ball". Likely coined off the name of the existing Japanese soccer-like sport called けまり【蹴鞠】 kemari or しゅうきく shuukiku, itself derived from the Chinese sport Cuju, spelled with the same characters. The Japanese term 【蹴球】 was borrowed into Korean sometime during the Japanese occupation, giving 축구 chukgu "soccer; football".
