Attested under the spelling tonen "cette année" (this year) in the 1826 book Élémens de la grammaire japonaise [abridged from Arte da lingoa de Iapam], translated and edited by Ernest Augustin X. Clerc de Landresse. Cognate to Mandarin 【当年・當年】 dāngnián "those days".
