Etymology
Attested in the late 16th century. Cognate to Kumamoto ひやか hiyaka; Yoron ぴーさい piisai; and Okinawan ふぃーさん fiisan "cold". Related to the standard Japanese terms ひえ【冷え】 hie "the cold; a chill", ひや【冷・冷や】 hiya "cold water; cold sake", ひやり【冷やり】 hiyari "a sudden chill; a shiver", ひえる【冷える】 hieru "to become cold, chilly; to cool down", and ひやす【冷やす】 hiyasu "to cool". Also related to older Japanese term ひ【氷・冰】 hi "hail" or "ice".
Notes
This adjective is now rare in Kansai, but remains in common use in Kochi Prefecture.
