Etymology
Presumably from proto-Japonic ぴと【人】 pito, cognate to standard Japanese ひと【人】 hito. Most probably borrowed from surrounding dialects, as Okinawan does not retain initial *p and undergoes palatalization of alveolar consonants near the high vowel /i/.
