おらぶ

orabu

Definition

Verb

  1. To shout

Etymology

Cognate to southern Japanese おらぶ orabu "to shout" (attested throughout Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu). Also cognate to Amami あべィゆい abïyui; Okinawan あびーん abiin and あびゆん abiyun; and Yonaguni あびるん abirun "to shout". The Ryukyuan forms seemingly underwent the following shift: *orabi → *ˀurabi → *ˀwaabi → *ˀaabi.

Historically attested in the Man'yōshū (MYS.9.1809) in the compound 叫於良妣 sakyebi orabi "wailing".
