ぞわた【ぞ腸・臓腸】 : zowata | define meaning
zowata
Definition
Noun
- Internal organs; intestines; guts
Etymology
Cognate to Tokushima (Awa) and Kagoshima ぞろわた zorowata; Tokushima (Matsushige), Fukuoka (Itoshima) and Kumamoto (Amakusa) ぞうわた zouwata; Fukuoka (Hakata, Itoshima) ぞうばた zoubata; Kagawa and Kagoshima ぞわた zowata; Kagoshima ぞぞわた zozowata; Kagoshima (Osumi) ずずいわた zuzuiwata "internal organs, guts, intestines".
Ultimately from *zouro-, a reduced form of ごぞうろっぷ【五臓六腑】 gozouroppu or ろくぞうろっぷ【六臓六腑】 rokuzouroppu, both which refer to the combination of five or six internal organs in traditional Chinese medicine; and わた【腸】 wata "stomach; internal organs, intestines". The Osumi form includes いわた iwata "intestines" (compare Okinawan いーわた iiwata "intestines"), possibly from い【胃】 i "internal organs, guts" and わた【腸】 wata.
The spellings 【臓腸】 and 【臓々腸】 are used in some sources.
