Etymology

Possibly derived from the prefix えら【偉・豪】 era, meaning "large, huge", and the word  はぶ【蛇・波布】 habu, meaning "snake, serpent".

Notes

Some aquatic snakes unique to the Ryukyu Islands include the Erabu black-banded sea krait (Laticauda semifasciata), Kikuzato's brook-snake (Opisthotropis kikuzatoi),  and the Slender-necked Seasnake (Hydrophis melanocephalus).
