Derived from the root ばす【芭蕉】 basu "banana", cognate to Okinawan ばさ basa, Amami ばしゃ basha "banana", standard Japanese ばしょう bashou "Japanese Fiber Banana" and Mandarin 【芭蕉】 bājiāo "plaintain; banana". Followed by the genitive marker ぬ nu and the term ない【生い】 nai "fruit".
