あまめ・アマメ

amame

Pronunciation: [amame]

Definition

Noun

  1. Cockroach
  2. Wharf roach (Ligia exotica), an isopod ressembling a cross between a shrimp and a woodlouse commonly found near the water shore.

Etymology

Cognate to the Okayama and Kagawa word あまこ amako "cockroach"; and the Wakayama word あま ama "cockroach". The term may originate from the standard term あま(め)【海女】 ama(me), meaning "female (shell, pearl) diver", given that wharf roaches are common near the water shore. It might also be a regional variation of the standard Japanese term あぶらむし【油虫】 abura mushi, meaning "aphid; louse; cockroach" (literally "oil bug").

Notes

Kagoshima pitch accent: LLH.
