Etymology
Of Sino-Japanese origin. No known cognate exists in Ryukyuan. The initial syllable りん【林】 rin "forest, woods" in Japanese is of Chinese origin and is cognate to Mandarin lín; Cantonese lam4; Min Nan lîm; Sino-Korean 임 im (from 림 lim); Sino-Tagalog lim; and Sino-Vietnamese lâm. The second syllable ご【檎】 go, would be related to Chinese 【果】 "fruit" (cf. Mandarin guǒ; Cantonese gwo2; Min Nan kó; Sino-Korean gwa).
Similar to the words used in Chinese, compare: Min Nan 【蓬果】 phōng-kó and 【蘋果】 pîn-kó "apple"; Mandarin 【蘋果・苹果】 píngguǒ "apple"; and Cantonese 【蘋果】 ping4 gwo2 "apple". In the latter three, the core word 【蘋】 "apple" may have been borrowed from Sanskrit बिम्बा bimbā "spiny bitter gourd (sp. Momordica Monadelpha)". Also similar to the Sino-Korean word 사과 sagwa (where sa- stems from the word "sand"). The Taiwanese Hokkien term lìn-go was borrowed from Japanese.
