Etymology
Historically attested in Japanese. The sentence niffon guchi và xiranu "I don't know Japanese" was recorded in Diego Collado's Ars grammaticae Iaponicae lingvae (Grammar of the Japanese language), 1632. Ultimately derived from the rendaku form of くち【口】 kuchi, meaning "mouth" and, by extension, "speech", "talk", "opening", "entrance", etc.
