Etymology

Derived from a reduction of the Western Japanese past form of the verb わらう【笑う】 warau "to laugh". Cognate to Kansai わろうた【笑うた・笑ろうた】 warouta and わろた【笑ろた】 warota; Kagoshima わるた【笑た・笑るた】 waruta (from わる waru < わるう waruu "to laugh"); and standard Japanese わらった【笑った】 waratta "laughed".
