ru
Pronunciation: [ɾu]
Definition
Particle
- Marks the focus of the sentence or utterance
Etymology
Variant of どぅ du. Generally linked to the Old Japanese particle ぞ zo.
Notes
In some Ryukyuan variants, the topic particle (-ya) can occur more than once in a single phrase, which may have contributed to its semantic weakening. In place, the focus particle serves to mark the most important core argument of an utterance. The particle is especially common in Southern Ryukyuan variants such as those of Miyako and Yaeyama.
