- Atlas moth (sp. Attacus atlas)
Etymology
Likely derived from あやみ【文目】 ayami "pattern" (cf. standard Japanese あやめ ayame "pattern; design"), and はびる habiru "butterfly; moth" (cf. Okinawan はーべーるー haabeeruu or はべる haberu "butterfly").
Notes
The Atlas moth (sp. Attacus atlas) is one of the world's largest moths and is native to the southern Ryukyu Islands and much of South East Asia. It is distinctly characterized by its brownish hue and its apical forewing extensions that resemble the head of snakes. The variant native to Yonaguni, Ishigaki and Yaeyama is classified under the subspecies Attacus atlas ryukyuensis.
