Etymology

Derived from しま 【島】 shima, meaning "island" or "community" in Amami, as well as the term ゆむた yumuta, which may stem from the verb よむ【詠む】 yomu, meaning "write, compose, chant, sing, recite". Note that the similar term yunta ユンタ yunta is used in the Okinawan language to designate a type of song sung in groups.
