Etymology

From とー【唐】 too "China", the genitive particle ぬ nu, and the suffix ちゅ【人】 chu "person, people". Attested in the 1896 沖縄語典 Okinawagoten, by Masayo Nakamoto (p. 61), under the spelling たうぬちゆ taunuchiyu.

Notes

Variants: とーぬっちゅー toonucchuu ~ toonutchuu, or とーんちゅ toonchu.
