Cognate with standard Japanese 【四】 shi "four". Ultimately from Chinese 【四】 "four" (cf. Mandarin ; Cantonese sei3; Eastern Min and sé̤ṳ; Hokkien and sìr; Sino-Korean 사 sa; Sino-Vietnamese tứ), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *sijH.

Historical Ryukyuan attestations

  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Four. Shee (Loo-Choo); Eéoots see, or joo (Japan)", "Fourteen. Sheénjoo", "Twenty four. Hácoo sheénjoo, or sheehácoo" and "[Names of the hours] Four. Shee twit'chee".
