Cognate with standard Japanese し【四】 shi "four". Ultimately from Chinese 【四】 "four" (cf. Mandarin sì; Cantonese sei3; Eastern Min sé and sé̤ṳ; Hokkien sì, sù and sìr; Sino-Korean 사 sa; Sino-Vietnamese tứ), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *sijH.
