Etymology

Cognate with standard Japanese じゅう【十】 juu "ten". Ultimately from Chinese 【十】 "ten" (cf. Mandarin shí; Cantonese sap6; Eastern Min sĕk; Hokkien cha̍psi̍pse̍ and chia̍p; Sino-Korean 십 sip; Sino-Vietnamese thập), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *dzyip.

Historical Ryukyuan attestations

  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Ten. Joo (Loo-Choo); Too (Japan)", "[Names of the hours] Ten. Joo twit'chee",  "Eighteen. Kwat'chee joo, or fat'chee joo", "Twenty, eight. Hácoo fat'cheejoo", "One year consists of twelve months. It'chee ning, joo nee gwaútsee", "Twelve hours make one day.
