Cognate with standard Japanese はち【八】 hachi "eight". Ultimately from Chinese 【八】 "eight" (cf. Mandarin bā; Cantonese baat3; Eastern Min báik; Hokkien poeh, peh, piē and pat; Sino-Korean 팔 pal; Sino-Vietnamese bát), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *peat.
