こーぬしし : koonushishi | define meaning
koonushishi
Pronunciation: [koːnuɕiɕi]
Definition
Noun
- Kerama deer (Cervus nippon keramae sp.); Kerama sika deer
Etymology
Cognate with Okinawan (Akajima) こーなし koonashi; Okinawan (Shuri) こーぬしし koonushishi; and standard Japanese かのしし【鹿】 kanoshishi "sika deer".
Discussion
- The vowel discrepancy between Okinawan and standard Japanese, as well as the loss of the final syllable in Akajima, suggest the term was borrowed into Okinawan from a Kagoshima dialect where it may have been pronounced *ko(o)nosiH.
