During the Paantu festival in Shimajiri, Hirara, male villagers will dress up as paantu (deities) by covering their faces with a wooden mask and wearing a costume comprised of vines, grasses, branches and mud. They will often smear mud on people and houses as part of a tradition to ward off evil spirits.
