Etymology

Cognate with standard Japanese おくり【送り】 okuri "sending off".

Notes

During Uukui, family members gather around their ancestral altar to send off the spirits of their ancestors after welcoming them during the Kyū Bon or Obon period. Typically, incense and uchikabi (paper money for the afterlife) are burned and food is offered up in a bowl placed on the altar.
