Ultimately from Chinese 【象棋】 "Xianqi" (cf. Mandarin xiàngqí; Cantonese zoeng6 kei4-2 and zoeng6 kei4; Eastern Min chiông-gì; Hokkien chhiūⁿ-kî, chhiǔⁿ-kî and chhiōⁿ-kî), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *zjangX gi. Most likely borrowed from Eastern Min (Fuzhou).
Historical Ryukyuan attestations
- Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Chessmen. Choónjee" and "Play, to, at chess. Choónjee óchoong".
