Etymology

Ultimately from Chinese 【象棋】 "Xianqi" (cf. Mandarin xiàngqí; Cantonese zoeng6 kei4-2 and zoeng6 kei4; Eastern Min chiông-gì; Hokkien chhiūⁿ-kîchhiǔⁿ-kî and chhiōⁿ-kî), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *zjangX gi. Most likely borrowed from Eastern Min (Fuzhou).

Historical Ryukyuan attestations

  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Chessmen. Choónjee".
