Etymology

Cognate with standard Japanese いだく【抱く・懐く】 idaku "to hold (in one's arms)" and its variants だく daku, うだく udaku and むだく mudaku.

Historical Ryukyuan attestations

  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Carry, to, a child in the arms. Dáchoong".
