Cognate with Okinawan ちじゃく chijaku; Yaeyama (Hatoma) きざく kizaku; and the now-obsolete Japanese ちゅうじゃく【鍮石】 chuujaku and ちゅうしゃく chuushaku "brass", historically written in Man'yōgana as 中若左 and 中若古.

Historical Ryukyuan attestations

  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Brass. Cheéjackko, or Toong".
