Etymology

Cognate with standard Japanese もうせん【毛氈】 mousen "felt", often referring to a red felt cloth used as a rug or table cloth for ceremonial purposes. Ultimately from Chinese 【毛氈・毛毡】 "felt" (cf. Mandarin máozhān; Cantonese mou4 zin1), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *maw tsyen.

Historical Ryukyuan attestations

  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Baize, red. Moóshung".
