  1. An upright stone tablet or slab, on which the characters 石敢當 are inscribed, used to ward off evil spirits. Shigandang; Ishigantō.

Etymology

Ultimately from Chinese 【石敢當・石敢当】 "stone tablet used to ward off evil spirits" (cf. Mandarin shígǎndāng; Cantonese sek6 gam2 dong1; Hokkien chio̍h-kám-tong and se̍k-kám-tong).

Notes

Shigandang are often placed at the head of a three-way or T-shaped intersection or at the end of a dead-end street.
