Etymology

From うぐゎん【御願】 ugwan "prayer" and the rendaku form of ふとぅち【解ち】 futuchi "unravelling, untying".

Notes

In Okinawa, it is tradition to give thanks to a god or Buddha for fulfilling one's prayers and wishes at an alter in one's home on the 24th day of the 12th month of the lunar calendar. Items such as foods and decorations are also placed on the alter.
